Hermes' Story

Our model is simple yet effective; we give our youth the opportunity to tap into their own curiosity, seek adventure and learn naturally. One particular way we cultivate this is through mentorship. Having a deeper focus and personalized attention on our youth ultimately allows them to see their full potential. All Hermes needed was guidance and support, in order to see the light within himself.

Hermes’ mother signed him up for one week of our summer program in July of 2022. He was a quiet, smart, and caring 13-year-old. With each day, we saw Hermes build relationships with the youth and staff. After the first week, Hermes had gained new skills, built relationships and found his inner confidence. He rode his bike to our facility every day and always wanted to come back. Some mornings, we’d find Hermes waiting for our doors to open, just so he could help in any way that he could. Hermes volunteered his time to assist in programming and teach other youth participants what he knew.

Throughout the summer, our Bike Shop Manager, Bill Trimble introduced the youth to our Community Bike Shop. “I can learn that, can I try?” said Hermes. There, he learned how to repair bikes and ride safely. Hermes listened carefully, asked questions and started to show interest. He began working with Bill to repair donated bikes and learned how to completely strip a bike, fix a flat and so much more. By learning about bike maintenance, he became an even better bike rider.

When it came time to ride with our youth, he wanted to be first in line to lead. He always wanted to be right next to our staff and felt like a leader in that position. “I can’t wait to work here and I can’t wait to become a staff member and teach the kids how the staff taught me!” said Hermes. We witnessed his self-development right before our eyes. He not only faced new challenges with ease, but he came out of his shell and found a new passion. “I noticed he seems to be a bit more determined, social and outgoing,” said Hermes’ mother, “I am so happy to see those changes and to see him growing.”

Hermes’ story exemplifies our mission for the children we serve. Our 3:1 ratio is intentional, because it allows for safety and trust to be built. We prioritize developing quality relationships and fully invest in the youth’s needs. By creating safe spaces for our youth to be themselves, they’re bound to have fun and learn naturally.

We are merely a vessel for youth to spark their inner light. Everything they need to believe in themselves is already within them, we are only there to empower them along the way. Hermes and many other youth participants all have a story. We provide the pages, they take the pen and write their stories themselves.
